The January edition of the Robot
Competition FAQ is out. There have been a lot of updates and several
new contests have been added. One of the new events, the IRRF Open Challenge, is intended to
provide a replacement for the ill-fated DARPA Grand Challenge.
It looks like a "just started" group with no money, no resources, and
no sponsors trying to see if they can drum up any business.
I suspect it's mostly about money.
A 300 mile long cross country course is pretty neat, but in today's
world, you need cooperation from the local and state governments, and
lots of insurance.
Plus you still need lots of money to hedge against the inevitable
lawsuits that will ensue.
Now holding a race in an arena, where the robots have to navigate a
ever changing course might be more cost effective. Now the audience can
watch the proceedings and it is visible to everyone.
