NASA UAV to Study Lightning

Posted 11 May 2001 at 13:55 UTC by steve Share This

A NASA press release describes a plan by NASA to send an Unmanned Aerospace Vehicle (UAV) called the ALTUS on a research mission to study lightning. The craft will fly over and around thunderstorms while being remotely piloted from the safety of a ground station. Photos and specifications for the ALTUS can be found at General Atomics, the manufacturers of the robot vehicle.

I forgot to use the politically correct version of the UAV acronym. They are now referred to as Uninhabited Aerospace Vehicles rather than Unmanned Aerospace Vehicles. (though talking about "inhabiting a vehicle" seems like a more bizarre use of the English language to me than using man in a generic sense. Oh well...)
