Navy Loses an AUV

Posted 7 May 2004 at 17:29 UTC by steve Share This

Noah Shackman noticed a Canadian Press report saying that the Navy can't seem to find their Battlespace Preparation Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (PDF format). The bright yellow BPAUV weighs 800 pounds, is 122 inches long, 21 inches in diameter and was last seen off the coast of Norway where it was taking part in a military exercise. The BPAUV was built by Bluefin Robotics where you can find more photos and video of the robot sub. The Navy's highly automated and futuristic-looking HSV-2 Swift vessel is still out looking for the little lost robot.

I just got word that the lost AUV has been found 200 miles from where it was lost. It was seen grounded on the beach of Stavanger, Norway, by a local resident out for a walk. Noah Shachtman has the full story in his blog:
