A new Sky.com article profiles Wu Yulu, a farmer in rural China who builds robots from scrap found at rubbish dumps. He has built 6 robots ranging from small biomemetic bots to big multi-legged walkers. Like many robot inventors, he has been burned by exploding batteries, fallen into debt, and had a short-circuiting robot burn down his house. The article quotes his wife as saying, "at least he doesn't drink or chase other women". More on Wu Yulu's robots can be found in a China Pictorials article from earlier this year.
cybernetics and robotics is one of those things you've just got to balance up. I know just how easy it is to get so wrapped up in a design or concept that you forget about the other things in life. Sounds crazy but I know guys who almost broke up with thier girlfriends/wives because of robotics projects. sometimes you just have to wiegh these things up. Sometimes a girl or family is more important than a Perceptron, program listing or servo motor. I hope Mr Wu's family are cool with everything.
Slightly off-topic, but I highly recommend reading Getting Things Done; The Art of Stress-Free Productivity.
