Roboclimber: a Giant Rock Climbing Robot

Jean-Paul Blaquiere writes about a recent ESA news article, saying it "describes the first field demonstration of a commercial robot which is being used to stabilise sheer cliffs against landslides in Italy". The teleoperated, four-legged Roboclimber is a BIG robot. It weighs 3800 kg and is 2 meters by 2.5 meters in size. It prevents landslides by drilling into sheer cliffs and inserting stabalizing rods. For more, there is an older ESA article showing construction photos of the robot and an animation of its movement.

I read the artical and to be honest I am quite surprised that the robot can climb. It looks very clunky but I supose looks can be deceiving. One thing that made me laugh was the picture of the operators computer desk sitting directly underneath the robot. I wouldnt want to be sitting there if the robot fell!
