Teaching Computers to Read

DARPA has invested $400,000 in a project to teach computers to read. They want computers that can read in the way humans read; able to comprehend and learn from the meaning of the words. Bringsjord has also developed a program called Brutus 1 that writes short stories. But the program isn't writing convincingly about the bad guys in stories. "This means defining evil, defining lying, which isn't as straightforward as it would seem", says Bringsjord.
