Consciousness and Adaptive Behavior

A new paper by Richard Sieb attempts to explain how subjectivity could arise and how a subjective system might be more adaptable by utilizing changing points of view to respond to change. In the paper, he proposes that voluntary intentional actions arise from an animal's (or machine's) unique point of view - and if the physical mechanism responsible for the production of the action can be found, it may also explain the point of view (which he identifies with consciousness).

Consciousness has no specific mind-module in the Mentifex Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), because consciousness is an epiphenomenon that emerges when the searchlight of attention deceives the mind into a sensation of self-awareness. But to believe in or to experience self- awareness is the very reality of self-awareness. The trick is -- to be tricked into consciousness. Therefore consciousness is not localizable in any particular, non-aggregate brain area or software module -- it is a process of a mind observing its own mental processes.
