A New Fleet of Floating Robots

Posted 3 Jun 2001 at 16:02 UTC by steve Share This

Argo is a project to deploy a global array of 3,000 autonmous floating robots into the worlds oceans. Each robot will cycle between the surface and 2,000 meters of depth recording salinity, temperature, and an exact measurement of sea level. All this data will be reported to Jason-1, an orbiting communications satellite. Thestar.com has an article with a good summary of the project. It appears the Argo fleet may be competing for space with SOLO, another global fleet of similar robots which is measuring carbon sequestration.
