Nanoparticles used to Fight Cancer

Smalltimes has a new story covering two projects developing nanotechnology to fight cancer. The first uses tiny nanoparticles made of plastic and a magnetic material to fight brain cancer. The nanoparticles are attached to a cancer antibody and follow it through the blood-brain barrier to the cancer site. There they serve as markers on MRI scans allowing ultra-precise lasers to targer the cancer cells. The second project uses a simpler approach. Larger nanoparticles are attached to cancer antibodies and travel to the cancer site. Because of their size, they lodge in the final capillaries that feed the cancer and are made of a substance that causes them to attach to the capillary wall, permanently blocking off the tumors blood supply.
