The first Swine flu death in the US has occurred in Texas. The CDC expects to see more cases of flu and more deaths in the coming days. This news has prompted schools in Singapore to cancel student trips to the VEX Robotics Competition World Championship, which is scheduled to be held in Dallas, Texas on April 30 through May 2 at the Dallas Convention Center. Over 280 teams from around the world are expected to attend. VEX Robotics has posted a noticed on their site saying the event will go on as planned despite the flu. However, they also note that, in effort to protect the teams attending, if any local authorities close a school, the team from that school cannot participate and is requested to withdraw from the competition. Unfortunately, a post in the Vex forum confirms the Mexican teams will not be able to attend because Mexican authorities have closed all schools nationally. It was announced today that widespread school closings could begin in the US if the situation grows more serious, and some Texas schools are already closing so other teams should monitor the news over the next few days.
