Toshiba has announced a new 200MHz, MIPS-based, 64bit RISC CPU for embedded applications such as robotics. The new chip, designated TX4925, can run Linux as well as other popular embedded operating systems. The chip includes integrated PCI and PCMCIA controllers, a real-time clock, multiple timers, and the usual assortment of serial and parallel ports.

Wow, it's amazing how the term embedded seems to have changed over the years. I guess a PC (or a cray) on a chip is considered embedded these days. Cool! It's like it's not good enough if an embedded chip just has a little memory and a few I/Os. Now-a-days it has to at least be able to run Linux or Windows and have tcpip ports and pci bus or it's not a decent embedded chip. Awesome! ...and me with a stockpile of pic chips. I'm just wondering when the cost will come down enough and the availibility up enough and the software tools here enuogh for little guys like me to get to play with them?
