Boston Dynamics is back with a new DARPA-funded quadruped robot that's bigger than Bigdog, which you've been seeing and reading about here since 2005. In addition to being a lot bigger, you'll also notice this new robot is a lot quieter, which is important for a robot that's going to be walking around on battlefields. The official name is LS3, for Legged Squad Support System. This new prototype moves the company closer to the goal of an autonomous robot that can carry 400 lbs of gear up to 20 miles, following troops and navigating via GPS and vision. The LS3 will make its first official walkout and begin testing with the US Marines in 2012.
