We reported in October about a tiny methane fuel cell being developed by Motorola for cell phones. Now there's news about NEC Laboratories developing a nanotechnology-based methanol fuel cell of similar size. The new fuel cells are expected to cost about the same price as lithium batteries but provide ten times the energy capacity. Both companies are targeting cell phone and PDA users but robot builders are looking forward to trying them too.
