US Navy Planning New UAVs

Posted 16 Apr 2002 at 13:02 UTC by steve Share This

According to a new Jane's article, the US Navy wants in on the UAV action that other branches of the military are exploring. Up until now, the bigest problem for the Navy in adopting a UAV has been the problem of recovering the craft after a mission. VTOL UAVs don't have enough range for naval missions and fixed wing craft have so far proven unable to make landings on carriers. New funding has been approved in 2002 to developed naval UAVs.

The Aerosonde people solved the 'carrier landing' problem by flying the UAV into a really big net. No, really - I've seen pictures. I s'poze the military UAVs might be too heavy for that technique, but I thought I'd mention it.
