The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab has announced the development of an autonomous mine-detection robot that is small enough to be carried in a backpack. The robot uses newly developed classification algorithms to avoid many of the false-positives given by other types of mine detectors. Even mines that are made primarily of plastic can be detected.
