EETimes has an interesting article on changes in the way MPUs and MCUs are being designed and utilized by engineers. Microcontrollers are more and more often Systems On a Chip (SOCs) with internal buses, SRAM, DRAM, and Flash and other essential components of computers. The article explores the diminishing differences between traditional MPUs and MCUs and suggests that they'll eventually merge into a single type of processor.
