Robot Plane Helps Harvest Coffee Beans

Posted 18 Oct 2002 at 14:22 UTC by steve Share This

Pathfinder-Plus, a NASA UAV, flew over the largest coffee plantation on the island of Kauai, Hawaii for more than four hours Wednesday. The UAV was taking digital images through holes in the 80% cloud cover which were assembled into a "clear-sky" mosaic showing which fields were ripest and ready for harvest. NASA claims that the UAV Coffee Project is the first ever commercial use of a solar-powered UAV. The Pathfinder-Plus is part of the NASA ERAST project. For more photos of Pathfinder-Plus, see the NASA Dryden Pathfinder-Plus photo collection.
