Japan Celebrates Astro Boy's Birthday

Posted 3 Apr 2003 at 15:16 UTC by steve Share This

The anime robot Tetsuwan Atom or Astro Boy as he was known in the US version was born on April 7, 2003 according to the original storyline from the 1950 era comic. Japan is celebrating the birthday this month with a nativity-like museum exhibit reenacting Astro Boy's birth. A Japan Times article credits Astro Boy as the source of Japan's attitude toward robots and their current lead in the development of humanoid robots. Another article in the Daily Yomiuri includes the opinions of Japanese experts on Astro Boy's cultural impact.

I almost forgot this related article from ABC news describing a successful April Fools joke in Japan in which a newspaper article claimed Japan would be sending Astro Boy-like robots to Iraq to help rebuild after the war.
