An Arizona border watch group called the American Patrol has developed a DIY UAV called the Border Hawk to patrol the US/Mexico border and help stop the flow of illegal aliens into the US. The Border Hawk is 3 feet long, has a 6 foot wingspan, and flies at 300-400 feet. It is equipped with a video camera, GPS sensor, and was built for about $5000. After sighting illegal aliens entering the US, the video evidence and GPS coordinates of the intruders are provided to US Border Patrol authorities. The first field test occured last month. Video from the UAV's testing is online. A disapproving media has labeled the group "vigilantes" and "racists" for not wanting to allow illegal access to the US across the US/Mexico border. Overworked US Border Patrol officers have praised the UAV, however. A more accurate account can be found in a recent Arizona Republic article.
