A new Guardian article addresses the question of why real world robots seem so disappointing compared to what science fiction predicted. The answer is that it isn't easy to build robots that have human-like congnitive abilities. The article suggests that we actually have the hardware to build smart robots today, it's just that no one knows how to put the parts together the right way and build the software smart enough to make them sentient.
