I am Head of the Department of Design and Innovation at the Open University in the UK. We are the largest university in the UK with 100,000 undergraduates and 200,000 people studying our materials each year. Eight years ago I led the team designing a Lego-based robot kit for our mechatronics course, with OU-designed on-board computer hardware and IR communication with a PC. I also co-authored the textbook 'Concepts in Artificial Intelligence' with Phil Picton (Butterworth, 1995). I have taken robot soccer teams to Mirosot (Korea, 1997), RoboCup (Paris, 1998), Mirosot (Dortmund, 1999), RoboCup Junior (Seattle, 2001). I am a member of the RoboFesta International Committee, chair of RoboFesta-UK, and a member of the European RoboFesta Committee (, www.robofesta-, I am also on the committee of RoboCup Junior. In 2000 we held a children's robot design competition with the BBC in the UK, that attracted 32,000 designs. We took the four winners and their families to RoboFesta in Yokohama in November 2001. We are digitising the designs to make a research database. I am currently working on a new suit of robotics courses for the Open University. The new courses will all give hands-on laboratory work based on Lego MindStorms, with our own add-on hardware and software. My robotics research concerns a new mathematical representation for the emergent dynamics of collaborating robots, integrating high level goals and sub-goals, and low level control. I use robot soccer as the example, and have a research student working on this with me. From January to March 2002 I am British Council - Monkasho visiting professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering. I am hoping to draft a introductory book on control theory with Masanori Sugiska while I am here. I expect that is enough for the moment, Jeff Johnson
