Hello, My first experience developing a robot occurred while in college. I was in an embedded systems development class with a couple of friends when we were contemplating a final project. One of my group members suggested creating a robot to extinguish a candle flame. We all agreed on developing the fire fighting robot for our final design project. Our Brazilian born team member named the robot Bombeiro, which means Firefighter in Portuguese. We all worked very hard developing the robot’s locomotion, sensing and software. Working on the robot was very rewarding and the final demonstration was a smashing success. I’ve been hooked on robotics ever since. While in college I also worked on larger mobile robot that we took to Florida to compete in the International Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC). My personal goal for the project was just to be able to compete. We meet my personal goal of competing and exceed my goal in 2002 by taking 5th place in the Autonomous Challenge. Not bad with a first year robot built with a budget of $250! As of late, I’ve been engaged in creating a business to cater to the needs of robotics students, hobbyists, and researchers. The goal is to provide high quality and affordable robotic platforms to roboticist for the purpose of learning and experimenting with mobile robots. My company is Muto Robotics. I’ve been very with my career over the last several months so I haven’t had as much time as I’d like to spend on robotics. My career is on the right track now, so some free time has opened up. My wife is pregnant with twins; they are due in December. I’ve got a window of a couple of months to work on some of the robotic stuff that has been on the back burner. I figure that I’ll be on the sidelines of the robotics playing field again for awhile after the twins are born.
The dog is man’s best friend and if I was an infantry man in war time I wouldn’t mind having one around to carry my pack. It appears that DARPA agrees. Boston Dynamics has done some very impressive work on a large four legged robot called BIGDOG. There’s a video on youtube at
It looks like Boston Dynamics is continuing their research with a smaller version. I can see why; less power is need which means no loud internal combustion engine and it makes testing indoors a whole lot more convenient. I thought you might enjoy a video at
