I'm involved in developing the 3pi Robot, which is a small (3.7") circular robot based on an ATmega168 microcontroller. Since it has five reflectance sensors, can drive over 1 m/s, and can make precise turns, it's great for line following, maze solving, etc. You might be interested in going straight to the User's Guide, which has lots of pictures and example code.
